Artist Image

Elizabeth Parsons (1831–1897) was an English-born artist who significantly contributed to the Australian art scene in the late 19th century. Born on September 27, 1831, in Isleworth, England, she studied under notable artists Thomas Miles Richardson and James Duffield Harding, honing her skills in watercolors and lithography. In 1870, Parsons and her husband emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Upon arrival, she quickly established herself as a professional artist, exhibiting her works in the "Works by Victorian Artists" exhibition at the Melbourne Public Library in December 1870. Her landscapes, often depicting the Australian countryside, were well-received for their quality and composition. Parsons was a trailblazer for women in the arts; in 1874, she became the first woman elected to the Council of the Victorian Academy of Arts. She was also an active member of Melbourne's Buonarotti Club, a semi-bohemian artistic and literary society, and later founded a similar group called "Stray Leaves." Elizabeth Parsons passed away on May 28, 1897, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering female artist who played a significant role in the development of Australian art.
